EMH announces new Emergency Services Physician Group and new Hospitalist Services

A new professional physician services group will serve Elbert Memorial Hospital's Emergency Department starting May 1.

HospitalMD (HMD) will provide emergency medicine in the ER as well as fulfill hospitalist duties throughout the rest of the Elberton hospital. Physicians will be on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

"EMH and HMD share goals of excellent professional clinical and customer services," said Hospital CEO Jim Yarborough. "We are committed to a new focus on significant continuous improvement on service to emergency patients. The EMH/HMD team will treat you and your loved ones with clinical professionalism as well as with compassionate care, just as they would treat family."

With the addition of new hospitalist services, HMD also will admit and care for patients beyond the Emergency Department if patients don't already have a relationship with one of the active admitting physicians at EMH. The hospitalist also allows patients of practices in other communities such as Bowman, Hartwell, and Royston to be admitted and cared for at EMH with all services communicated and coordinated with their out-of-town physician of choice. Patients established with The Medical Center of Elberton will continue to be admitted and cared for by their personal physician.

"Bringing HMD on board represents a significant Hospital Authority Board and EMH Medical Staff initiative to improve overall quality improvement and outcomes at Elbert Memorial Hospital," Yarborough said.

Dr. Khaldoon Al-Moosawi will complete his final year of Family Medicine Residency at Atlanta Medical Center in August 2014.  Affectionately called Dr. Al, he is 37 years old and just had his first child in December 2013.  He has thoroughly enjoyed his time at Elbert Memorial Hospital and is excited to join our team full time in September once his Residency is complete.  He brings a passion for providing outstanding customer care and satisfaction that is coveted by HMD!

Dr. George Amah (Emergency Medicine and Hospitalist Medicine) finished his Internal Medicine Residency in 1997 from Meharray Medical College in Nashville, TN. He has been the Medical Director of a clinic in Smyrna, GA since 2002.  He has also worked in a number of ER's and as a Hospitalist.  He also brings experience as a hybrid physician, meaning he has provided both EM and HM services concurrently.  Dr. Amah familiarity with the hybrid model has made him a natural fit to our physician team at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Alina Barrett completed her Family Medicine Residency in 2014 at Memorial Health University in Savannah, GA.  She was the Chief Resident from April 2013 until graduation, showing signs of exemplary leadership throughout her Residency.  She also completed two years of surgical Residency prior to her Family Medicine Residency. She has received numerous awards throughout her educational career, and is excited to bring her passion for patients to Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Paul Chukelu (pictured with Sandra Thompson, R.N.) graduated from the Ross School of Medicine in Edison, NJ in 2011.  He is currently completing his final year of Family Medicine Residency at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York.  He is looking forward to completing his Residency and moving back to Georgia and working full-time at Elbert Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Chukelu was also a Cancer Prevention Short-term Research Fellow and some of his research focused on Pesticide/Environmental Exposures and Cancer Prevention.  His enthusiasm is contagious, and we are excited to have him on our team.

Dr. Jimmy Graham completed an Internal Medicine Residency in 1978 at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals and followed with a Board Certification in Internal Medicine that same year.  Dr. Graham also received a Fellowship in Rheumatology at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals.  He received his Medical Degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in 1975.  He began his career working in a Private Practice in Internal Medicine and continued until 2008.  In 2008, Dr. Graham began working as a Hospitalist for North Georgia Medical Center and stepped into a leadership role as the Medical Director.  In September 2011, Dr. Graham took on the additional role of Medical Director of the Emergency Department (ED), and has served the hospital in both capacities since that time.  Dr. Graham has accepted the Medical Directorship of both the ED and Hospitalist services, and we were delighted to retain his exemplary services.

On May 1, 2014, Dr. Graham accepted the position of Regional Medical Director of GA.  Since his time with HMD, he has shown a natural ability to lead a team of physicians and staff to provide the clinical and customer satisfaction initiatives that are so important to the success of HMD and our client hospitals.  He currently is actively involved with the management and oversight of 4 GA hospitals and the Medical Directors at those facilities.
